facebook is constantly suggesting friends for me. girls, guys, people i have nothing in common with, people i have everything in common with, it is random - based only on a common clump of mutual friends that have also made it through my skimpy friend selecting process. i wish in real life there was something to let you know who the good friends were going to be. which ones are going to be...

cheesy onion green bean casserole
as a rehabilitated control freak, i am not one who knew a lot about “letting go”. i might have had to control my first kiss - and dot dot dot breakups; even my diary was written with my future grandchildren in mind. however, as i get older i find myself simply not caring about things as much as i used to. call it an exasperated, hands-in-the-air- giving up, but i am forfeiting to...

mexican suitcases exhibition
while in new york, I saw an exhibition at the international center of photography. they were a collection of photographs by Robert Cappa depicting the Mexican civil war. The photographs were only recently discovered in 2007.
Cappa was a photographer who was one of the first to document war. what was interesting about this exhibition was the display. while many photographs were blown up...

fairy tale fashion
One of my favorite fashion photographers is Annie Liebovitz. I saw a portrait exhibition of hers at the LACMA in LA a couple of years ago. Here are a couple of my favorites.

my travels
fascinating things happen at airports and on airplanes. as an east coast girl living in the west, i have visited almost every major airport in the united states multiple times. chicago is my favorite, because it has a potbelly sandwich shop right next to a ben and jerrys. lax is best for people watching, because there are a lot of crazies there. and, as i found on this last trip, atlanta is the...

you know you are a nerd when . . .
you answer yes to 8 of the 10 following questions. if so, please call me and i will tell you the secret password for my club.
1) if you have ever had a friend telling you a story when you didn’t have ten minutes to listen to them go on and on and your first wish is to vulcan mind meld them right there and get it over it.
2) you are at a party and you would rather be home in your bed...
letting go, a writing tantrum
its hard letting go of things. and people. people are harder than things. for someone who is bored all the time, you think i would embrace change a little more. but i don’t. i want everything and everyone to stay the same. at least for a couple moments more. just a couple moments more. i want people to stop moving away. at least the good ones. usually the good ones move the farthest...

Hermoso bulliciosa ciudad
It is easy to belong in Barcelona. A place where new rewrites old, and sparkly department stores are housed in turn of the century buildings and a Toyo Ito is one block from a Gaudi.
out romanced
always the hopeless romantic, (hopeless being the operative word), i am enchanted by places that prompt poetry, inspire song, speak of hidden gardens and stolen glances, resplendent palaces and spiraling towers. the alhambra in granada is such a place, which evoked these words by washington irving, ”I lived in the midst of an Arabian tale, and shut my eyes, as much as possible, to every...
holy toledo
on a whim, we decided to take the train to toledo, a small little town about twenty minutes from madrid. this place populated the space already preconceived in my imagination about what spain would be like; narrow streets, ornate buildings, castles, rivers, tiny shops, cathedrals, lamp-posts, eateries. it was colorful corners to go around and winding alleyways to wander.
american girl in madrid
one never feels more american than when they are walking on foreign soil. especially when that person is wearing hot pink nike kicks and has a nikon slr hanging around their neck. whipping my head right to left to watch the european passerbys dressed in suade knee-high boots and tailored trench-coats, i immediately felt smaller than i normally do.
my american awareness only grew upon my...

I love so many things in this world, and one of them is efficiency. That is why, any one thing that combines multiple things that I love creates an internal swelling of supernova love in my little heart. Enter, tree houses. A combination of beds (love), forts (love), drawbridges (love), trees (love), stars (love), child-like imagination (love). Regular houses are boring. Since childhood, the...
